Should You Self-Drive or Hire a Private Mini Bus Transfer

There are different options for traveling from the airport to your ski resort – you can take the train, a coach, a private minibus transfer or you can drive yourself. However, train and coach times often don’t always match your flight arrival or departure time, which can mean a lot of waiting and you still have to hire a taxi or arrange pick-up from station to get to your accommodation. .

Small groups often seek to hire a car as a cheaper option than a private transfer service, but there can be many hidden extras when hiring a car that can significantly increase the quoted cost. If you are going to a ski resort, you will need snow chains and ideally snow tires. Chains are mandatory on various mountain roads and without snow tires you might find it a rather slippery and dangerous journey, if there is recent snow.

Another point to consider is the availability of parking. Many apartment buildings and cabins have limited or no parking, so you may have to pay for parking for the week. And of course there is the hassle factor. If you decide to use a private transfer company, someone will be waiting for you at the arrivals gate, someone to help you with your luggage, you can walk straight out the door and get into the minibus and sit down and relax, without the worry of having to navigate to the station and fight with traffic, find change for tolls, worry about fitting snow chains…

To give some examples of prices:

Ford Fiesta via RhinoCarHire, which can accommodate 4 adults and take about 3 suitcases costs 31.95 euros per day. It’s ‘all inclusive’ of taxes, airport fees and insurance, but if you bring skis and need a ski rack, it’s an extra 35 euros. Snow chains (compulsory to go up the mountain) cost 3.5 euros per day or 24.5 euros extra per week, snow tires (recommended) cost 7 euros per day or 49 euros extra per week. If you want an additional driver, it’s 63 euros extra per week and a child seat costs around 30 euros extra. So for a week’s rental with chains, ski racks and snow tires you are looking at a little less than 330 euros per week.

Easycar.com offers an Opal Corsa in which you can crush four adults in the blink of an eye and a few suitcases for 274 euros, including snow chains and tires. A larger car like a Golf costs 316 euros per week with snow tires and chains. Car seats, additional drivers and ski racks are all extra and there are no prices shown on the website and are payable when you collect the car but availability is not guaranteed.

BudgetInternational’s cheapest car is a Renault Clio which costs 278 euros per week. There is no information on the site as to the additional cost of snow tires, snow chains and ski racks, but an additional driver costs almost 10 euros per extra day.

Avis, renting from the Swiss side of Geneva, offers a Polo for around 54 euros per day (378 euros per week) which includes snow tires and chains. A ski rack is at an additional 42 euros per rental, a child booster seat at 34 euros per rental, an additional driver at 50 euros per week.

Europcar has a VW Polo for 380 euros with winter tires. Hertz has a Ford Fiesta for 330 euros with snow tires and snow chains. Sixt makes a VW Polo from 343 euros per week and snow tires are 4 euros more per day. Snow chains and a ski rack also cost around 4 euros extra per day.

You can also hire cars from the French side of Geneva airport. Car hire on this side can be cheaper but often does not include a winter pack and you will also need to purchase a Swiss vignette if you want to use the motorway in Switzerland. You can bypass Switzerland, but that adds about an extra hour to the journey.

On top of that there will be fuel and tolls of around 45 euros each way (based on Geneva airport to the Three Valleys region). The Swiss sticker (30 euros) should come as standard from a pick-up on the Swiss side of Geneva airport.

So you can get a compact car with snow tires and chains for around 330 to 380 euros a week. A ski rack is extra. In total, you could be looking at paying around 420-470 Euros for a car rental with all equipment, fuel and tolls to and from the airport.

A transfer for 1 to 4 people costs around 480 to 520 euros return so renting a car is only a little cheaper than a private mini bus transfer and of course you have to worry to drive in the snow, find the resort and accommodation, put on snow chains if the conditions are bad and parking.
