Your Life’s Report Card – How Are You Doing?

Remember when you were in high school or even elementary school, you used to get a report card every few months? If you behaved well, did your homework and studied, you might have received a B or even an A.

But if you somehow slacked off, you probably had to explain to your parents why you got a D or even an F.

Basically, your grade was your teacher’s opinion or assessment of how he thought you were coping with your responsibilities, actions, and behaviors.

Think you’re still getting newsletters today when you’re in your 30s or even 60s? Oh, the teachers have most likely retired or moved on to new classes and different students, but trust me, life always gives you a report card – every day, every month, and yes, every year.

It might not be a piece of paper with a bunch of letters or numbers on it, but believe me, are you still getting flak about how people in your life think you’re doing?

And who are these people? They are yours; clients, bosses, spouses, children, co-workers and often even some of the strangers who pass through your life like; flight attendants, restaurant servers, mechanics or your doctors.

No, they don’t all give you a written report, but they assess – who you are, how you act, what you believe, and even how you can deal with them.

So if I still have you, what kind of grades do you expect to get; a spouse (not referring here to counseling sessions), your boss (and I’m not talking about your annual checkups), your children (and I’m not talking about the grades they get in school or in the field football), your clients (and I’m not talking about the amount of money you could make) or your family doctor (and I’m not talking about your annual medical examination)?

Unfortunately, most people (and I include myself in this group) wait until they fail at something or something stops working before they make changes, try to improve, change their behavior or just to admit that what they do is or will one day give them an F.

Let me give you an updated grading system that’s a little more relevant in life than the report cards you used to get. I call it my life as it is Bulletin.

You get an A-

Notice I didn’t include an A+ in this group? It’s simple – none of us are perfect, we all have flaws, we all make mistakes and sooner or later we all fail at something. An A means you exceed life’s expectations. You learn, grow, mature, and recognize areas of life where you still need to improve. Your ego does not run your life. Your arrogance is in check and your patience is not asking you to do anything or everything faster, better and/or easier. Your need for control is under control. Your stress is not killing you. And your spiritual life is governed by humility, peace, giving and compassion. Yes, there are a few other things that contribute to your –

A – grade but ultimately those above are the main factors that tell you – you are on the right track, keep going. But be careful not to lose the above items, otherwise the consequences could be dramatic.

You get a B-

Take all the elements mentioned above and just reduce the definition, eg.

You are learning, growing, maturing, and recognizing areas of life where you still need to improve, but you are not doing all that you could or should do. Your ego does not rule your life, but it has its moments depending on the person or the situation. Your arrogance isn’t a serious problem, but it could be. Your lack of patience often manifests as your haste or need to do something faster, better, and/or easier. Your need for control is out of control. Your stress is not killing you yet but is having a negative impact on certain aspects of your health, your relationships or your life in general. And your spirituality needs more time, attention, effort and/or greater awareness.

You get a C-

AC means you are average in all of the above areas. You are not yet in serious difficulty anywhere, but you are not moving in the right or best direction of life either. If you don’t make changes quickly, you could find yourself in D or even F categories very quickly. It’s time to wake up and recognize that life isn’t easy, fast, accommodating, or revolves around your needs, expectations or desires. It’s time to grow up and it’s time to let go of your “the world owes me” and/or your “selfie mindsets”. It is a crossroads of life where you can change direction in a positive or more negative and destructive way. You can start moving into B territory and start getting better, stronger, wiser or healthier or you can wake up one day and realize you are failing and it might be too late to change.

You get a D-

AD means you are headed for disaster and time is running out. Make a few changes sooner or before you know it, life will give you an F. And trust me, an F can be expensive, uncomfortable, painful, and even deadly. AD says you still have time to sort things out, but life is gradually losing patience with you. He says, “I guess the only way to get your attention right now is with some kind of jolt, disaster, or circumstance (a divorce, bankruptcy, health attack, or layoff).” Don’t wait too long – the pain of changing a life at this point can cause many people to stop trying or give up on life altogether accepting the consequences of the next and final grade – an F.

You get an F-

An F means – you have failed and will spend a lot of time and your remaining life; alone, scared, in regret, angry, resentful, etc. Now is the time to pay the price for all your mistakes, failures, and poor choices and behaviors. Can you recover? Sure. Can you bounce back? Yes. Can you start over? Still. Can you get a second chance? Yes. But at this point, it will take a lot; humility, effort, surrender, admission, time, patience, hope, help and advice from others. And, it will require being willing to surrender control of what life brings to you and the willingness to trust God as you come to your senses.

So give yourself a note today; your finances, your marriage, your career, your business, your health, your social life, your relationships, your family and your spiritual direction and its beliefs, values and actions.
